Abstract
A broadly applicable synthetic protocol for the synthesis of a range of new 4-vinyl 1,2,3-thiadiazoles via Knoevenagel condensation has been developed. Surprisingly, X-ray diffraction analysis of one of the condensation products revealed the presence of a[2+2]-cycloaddition product – the first 1,2,3-thiadiazole substituted cyclobutane. In addition, a variety of new functionalized 1,2,3-thiadiazoles have been synthesized, including ethyl esters, alcohols, and aldehydes.
