Abstract
OLEDs have now become a successful commercial product, which makes the developments in this field economically driven and incredibly fast, while at the same time the scientific challenges are far from being solved. New technologies are investigated, as well as new materials as potential OLED emitters, among which lanthanide complexes are still considered of minor importance in view of their rather average performances. However, they are fundamentally different. This results in both promising opportunities unattainable using other material classes, which might promote their use, as well as in the necessity to significantly adjust the production process to align it with the use of this particular class of the emitters. The present review summarizes the peculiar features making lanthanides so special in OLED development and draws attention to every decisive feature shaping their potential importance in the field, from the price of the elements to the role of their lifetime. The main asset of these materials are their unique narrow bands, whose wavelengths perfectly match the requirements for screens and bio-applications. The reason for their current inferiority in comparison to other emitters is investigated and some clues are emerging from this analysis. The exception of NIR-emitting ytterbium, which overcomes compounds of other classes in electroluminescence intensity is described and explained. Based on the provided analysis, possible pathways for the evolution of lanthanide complexes toward practical OLED emitters are proposed, which will hopefully result in making lanthanide emitters great again.
