Abstract Polyvinyl alcohol hydrogels with multifunctional cross-links—silica nanoparticles surface-modified with phenylboronic groups—have been fabricated. It has been demonstrated that such hydrogels exhibit pronounced viscoelastic properties, and their viscosity and elastic modulus are significantly higher than those for gels with single borate ion cross-links.
