Elucidating the Structural Chemistry of a Hysteretic Iron(II) Spin‐Crossover Compound From its Copper(II) and Zinc(II) Congeners

In a spin: Structurally different [ML2][BF4]2⋅2 H2O (L=2,6-bis[5-methyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl]-pyridine; M=Fe, Cu or Zn) form the same anhydrous phase on annealing, which transforms to one of two new phases near room temperature. [ZnL2][BF4]2 shows unusual structural changes between 285–150 K, which are duplicated in its iron analogue by powder diffraction. This will contribute to the previously reported 65 K thermal hysteresis in the spin-transition shown by [FeL2][BF4]2.
