Abstract
The usefulness of high-valent iron(NHC) chromophores is based on long-lived, ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) states. However, short-lived, metal-centered states may be populated if the ligands are not strong enough donors. We show that, thanks to metal-ligand covalency, iron ions can bridge ligand–ligand electronic communication, promoting ligand-based photoinduced intervalence charge transfer (PIIVCT) bands: spectroscopic markers in the usually silent NIR region that allow the interconversion between LMCT- and metal-centered states to be monitored.
