Synthesis of 2‐Substituted Indoles by Pd‐Catalyzed Reductive Cyclization of 1‐Halo‐2‐nitrobenzene with Alkynes

Abstract
A tandem addition/reductive cyclization pathway for producing 2-substituted indoles from 1-halo-2-nitrobenzene and terminal alkynes is reported for the first time. The direct C−C and C−N bond formation involves a Sonogashira-type coupling reaction followed by reductive cyclization. The stable and robust dppf ligated Pd dithiolate complex was employed as catalyst and Zn as an inexpensive reductant.
