The protonic conductivity of heavily KOH-doped ice

The electrical conductivity and the dielectric permittivity of polycrystalline ice doped with KOH in concentrations between 10−4 and 1 mol/l are studied. The measurements are done at frequencies from 2.5 Hz to 150 kHz and temperatures from 123 to 273 K. In the low-frequency region (T < 200 K) the effective charge of the majority carriers is determined as ∣emaj∣= (0.61 ± ±0.02) eproton and the origin of these carriers is analysed. The nature of the high protonic conductivity (≈ 10 S m−1) in the premelting region is also discussed. The notion of a quasi-liquid layer of the 4 H2O + KOH system is introduced to explain the experimental facts in the intermediate temperature region.
