Mineral and Bone Disorder in CKD

Publication typeBook Chapter
Publication date2023-03-30
Abstract
Chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorder (CKD-MBD) is a complex combination of biochemical abnormalities of bone markers such as calcium, phosphate, and parathyroid hormone (PTH), abnormalities in bone turnover or mineralization, and vascular calcification. The goal of treatment for CKD-MBD is to prevent the adverse consequences associated with these abnormalities. The mainstay of treatment at present is phosphate restriction, phosphate binders, native and active vitamin D, calcimimetics, and combination of these agents depending on the available biochemical markers.
