Abstract
The evidence for the existence of carboxyphosphate as a distinct chemical entity is presented. The properties predicted for this unstable mixed phosphoanhydride are discussed. The evidence for the involvement of carboxyphosphate in the reactions catalyzed by carbamoyl-phosphate synthetases, biotin carboxylases and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylases is reviewed. The role(s) of this species in these reactions is discussed.
