Abstract
The chapter provides an in-depth exploration of how ordinary Pakistani Muslims perceive breaches of ideal Islamic conduct, examining both the transgressions and circumstances that lead to their classification as blasphemy. It addresses intricate questions such as whether there exists a socially agreed-upon definition of blasphemous conduct and how ordinary Pakistani Muslims perceive, internalize, and interpret blasphemy. Additionally, it explores the ramifications of inadvertently uttering or committing acts that may be perceived as sacrilegious, and whether there is remissible justification for suspected or actual blasphemy. The chapter examines the nebulous abstraction surrounding the notion of blasphemy, probing into the reasons behind unilateral determinations of blasphemy without granting the accused an opportunity to defend themselves. It focuses on why, despite the apparent absence of intent, accusations of blasphemy often fail to evoke public censure from a significant portion of the population that regards unsubstantiated charges as contrary to Islamic principles. It also examines how the notion of blasphemy is exploited for revenge, retaliation, and advancing personal agendas. Finally, the analysis scrutinizes how blasphemy incidents in the West influence the attitudes of Pakistani Muslims toward blasphemy and other religions, and whether they respond to the desecration of other faiths with the same level of sensitivity as they demonstrate toward Islam.
