Abstract
The harmonic oscillator plays an important role both in quantum physics and classical physics. It appears in an approximate way each time a system describes small-amplitude movements around an equilibrium position. In one dimension, any given potential V(x) can be written in the neighbourhood of one of its minima, $$x_0$$ , in the form of a Taylor series expansion approximated to second order.
