Optimization of the electrochemical properties of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode material by titanium doping

This experiment had adopted the titanium (Ti) doping technique to enhance the cyclic stability and rate capability of the LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode material by 2.7 and 4.3 V vs. Li/Li+, respectively. The XRD, EDS, and XPS analysis results clearly stated that the titanium ions were successfully combined into the ternary oxide lattice through inhabiting the transitional metal locations. In addition, the electrochemical characteristics indicated that the cathode materials prepared through Ti doping had more optimized activation energy for Li-ion migration; meanwhile, it effectively restrained the phase changeover among H2 and H3. Moreover, Ti doping efficiently inhibited the cation mixing. As found based on the investigated doped materials, the 1% Ti-doped LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 possessed excellent comprehensive characteristics. Typically, the Li(Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1)0.99Ti0.01O2 displayed excellent rate capability (182.73 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C and 137.07 mAh g−1 at 10 C) and high capacity retention (89.84% after 100 cycles at 1 C), while the bare sample remained 65.41% of the initial discharge capacity. Therefore, for the LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode material, Ti doping at an appropriate amount was notably advantageous to enhancing its electrochemical characteristics.
