New Palladium(II) complexes of 2-arylidene-1-(4-methyl-6-phenyl-pyrimidin-2-yl)hydrazines: synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, biological evaluation and protein binding

Abstract
Five new palladium(II) complexes of 2-arylidene-1-(4-methyl-6-phenyl-pyrimidin-2-yl) hydrazines have been synthesized and characterized by means of elemental analyses, spectroscopic techniques like IR, 1H–NMR, UV–visible, fluorescence and thermogravimetric analysis. In vitro antibacterial activity was carried out against two gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus), two gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa), in vitro antifungal evaluation against two fungal strains (Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and also compared with corresponding ligands. Interaction of the ligands and their Pd(II) complexes with bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated with the help of fluorescence spectroscopy. Emission spectroscopic studies reveal that complexes interact more strongly with BSA protein than their parent hydrazones. New Palladium(II) complexes of 2-arylidene-1-(4-methyl-6-phenyl-pyrimidin-2-yl) hydrazines complexes are comparatively good binding agents with BSA proteins than corresponding ligands. In vitro biological studies show that these metal complexes exhibit enhanced antibacterial and antifungal activities as compared to hydrazones.
