Abstract
Chilli is considered as one of the most important vegetable spices in world as well as in India. Chilli is cultivated worldwide in an estimated area of approximately 1832 million hectares. India is ranking top among all chilli producer countries in the world. Chilli leaf curl disease is becoming a major and serious threat for chilli production in the world as well as in India. Chilli leaf curl virus is the only causative agent for chilli leaf curl disease and it is spread by a vector- whitefly, in a persistent manner. Upward curling of leaves, vein yellowing, yellow mosaic are common symptoms of the Chilli leaf curl disease. Chilli leaf curl virus is a single stranded Begomovirus from Geminiviridae family. This review provides information about genome organization of begomoviruses, factors responsible for pathogenicity of begomoviruses, available resistant sources against leaf curl disease and possible future strategies to overcome impact of chilli leaf curl disease.
