Abstract
A new C-30 sterol (Z)-24-propylidenecholest-5-en-3β-ol has been isolated from the scallop Placopecten magellanicus (Gmelin). This is the second thirty-carbon sterol bearing a cholesterol-type nucleus to be identified. The first, gorgosterol from coelenterates, was recently shown by others to be a C-30 sterol with a cyclopropane moiety in the side chain. The new sterol was isolated by extensive thin-layer and gas-liquid chromatography and the structure determined by comparative physical methods; nuclear magnetic resonance, mass and infrared spectrometry. The new C-30 sterol has also been detected in other marine sterol mixtures.
