Romantic relationships on social media

Publication typeBook Chapter
Publication date2025-01-18
Abstract
Breakups are universally painful, but in the age of social media, they often play out on a public stage, especially for celebrities and other famous people. This chapter examines the role of social media in the formation, maintenance, and dissolution of romantic relationships, using public examples to highlight key points. Social media affordances or features such as visibility, permanence, and connectivity have reshaped how individuals navigate romantic relationships. Research reveals that these platforms influence dynamics in romantic relationships by facilitating relationship visibility, partner surveillance, and even jealousy, which can impact commitment and satisfaction. This chapter explores these themes across different stages of romantic relationships, from initial attraction to eventual dissolution, and considers individual and cultural differences in experiences. While social media offers new opportunities for connection and relationship affirmation, it also introduces challenges, such as increased jealousy and the potential for relationship conflict. Ultimately, the chapter underscores the need for mindful social media use to foster healthy, lasting romantic relationships.
