Publication typeBook Chapter
Publication date2025-01-18
Abstract
In an era where environmental sustainability is paramount, this chapter provides an in-depth exploration of geopolymer concrete (GPC), positioning it as a revolutionary and economically sustainable alternative to ordinary Portland cement within the construction industry. We offer a comprehensive analysis of GPC’s composition, emphasizing its utilization of industrial by-products such as fly ash and slag, which underscores its significant role in waste management and energy conservation. Additionally, the chapter sheds light on the groundbreaking advancements in GPC technology, including nano-enhancements and the development of novel aluminosilicate materials, which are pivotal in enhancing GPC’s mechanical properties and longevity. A pivotal focus of the chapter is GPC’s contribution to the circular economy model, highlighting its capability to reduce landfill dependencies and promote the recycling and reusability of materials. Incorporating a series of strategically selected case studies, we demonstrate GPC’s practical effectiveness and versatility in large-scale construction projects, showcasing its transformative potential in the construction sector. The chapter concludes by aligning GPC’s attributes with global sustainability objectives, thereby establishing its significance as a key element in the future of sustainable infrastructure development.
