A coordinated fast frequency approach on inverter based resource integrated power system with electric vehicle

Power electronic interactions result in scaling down of the inertial support from the Inverter based resources. Systems such as Doubly Fed Induction Generators, and Permanent Magnetic Synchronous Generators are capable of rendering kinetic energy stored in the rotational parts of the machine to the grid during contingencies. The energy transfer from the wind farms is facilitated through a centralized control station. Ancillary support from electric vehicle batteries in a hybrid grid that has a large number of wind farms may help regulate frequency during contingency. A coordination framework between the wind farm and the electric vehicle charging stations is presented in this paper. Although the primary objective of the charging hub is to provide charge support for the electric vehicle, modification in the hub controller enables the participation of the vehicle battery in the frequency regulation of the grid. Kinetic energy-based frequency support mechanisms are included with the Doubly Fed Induction Generators under consideration with greater inclination to the Fast Frequency Response models. The charging stations can effectively provide ancillary service to the power network if operated in unison as a single cluster based on the State of Charge of available vehicles and the interaction with the wind controller. The coordination between the Doubly Fed Induction Generators having distinct control loops and their grid interactions is analysed in a modified IEEE-9 bus system with the framework for integrating electric vehicle charging stations is presented in this paper.
