The formation rate of disperse carbon fibers during the thermal decomposition of acetylene in mixtures with nitrogen and hydrogen at temperatures from 450 to 700°C on metal wire surface was investigated. Direct observations of the initial process stages were carried out in an electron microscope. A comparison of the obtained results brings to a conclusion that the process takes place in two stages, the first one being a catalytic activation of the surface with a creation of active centres on it, and the second a growth of carbon fibers on the obtained active areas.
