Studies have been made of the reorganization of carbon deposited on cobalt, nickel and iron. Well oriented films of graphite can be prepared by dissolving amorphous carbon in cobalt and nickel at high temperatures, the film being produced by precipitation on cooling. Carbidic intermediates do not appear to be involved. No such deposits could be obtained on iron, apparently as a result of the formation and stability of iron carbides.
