The limited experimental data on the turbulent quenching of premixed flames have been scrutinized in the light of our theoretical understanding of the role of flame straining at different Lewis numbers, Le. Somewhat diffidently, two regimes are proposed to define flame quenching: u′ u 1 ⩾0.71R L 0.5 for R L and u′ u 1 ⩾3.1( R L Le 2 ) 0.25 for R L >300 , Where u′ is the rms turbulent velocity, u1 the laminar burning velocity, and RL the turbulent Reynolds number based upon the integral length scale.
