Abstract
(ZrO 2 + CaO)|(Pd + In)|In 2 O 3 have been used to determine the thermodynamic activities and Gibbs free energies of formation of the α (f.c.c.)-solid-solution and intermediate phases Pd 3 In, Pd 2 In, Pd 5 In 3 , PdIn, Pd 2 In 3 , and PdIn 3 at 873 K. Values obtained have been combined with previous calorimetric measurements of their enthalpies of formation to yield integral entropies of formation. Specific heat capacities of the phases Pd 3 In, Pd 2 In, PdIn, and Pd 2 In 3 at 150, 200, and and 298 K have been obtained by differential scanning calorimetry. The system is characterized by marked negative deviations from Raoult's law and negative entropies of formation of the solid phases. An analysis of the latter into configurational, electronic, vibrational, and magnetic contributions is suggested. The defect structure of the CsCl-like compound PdIn is discussed in the light of the observed variation of thermodynamic properties across this phase.
