The passivation layer which is formed on the surface of single crystals of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 − δ by fluorination has been studied using various techniques. The amorphous nature of the layer has been established by transmission electron microscopy, its thickness and composition have been determined using Auger electron spectroscopy, and the influence of fluorination on ESR properties has been pointed out.
