Abstract
The interaction of O 2 and a C 2 H 4 + O 2 reaction mixture with the surface of polycrystalline silver at P = 10 −2 −10 3 Pa and T = 420−620 K was studied by XPS, TDS and TPR. The formation of two states of O ads with E BO 1s = 528.4 and 530.5 eV is shown and the necessity of participation of both states in ethylene epoxidation is stated. It is assumed that an elementary carbon resulting from oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylene stabilizes defects of the silver surface and takes part in the formation of a mixed adsorption layer consisting of two states of O ads .
