The structure of carbon deposits on HDS catalysts

The deactivation of HDS catalysts for coal hydrogenation is usually attributed to metals and coke buildup on the catalysts. To simplify a study of its structure the coke was separated from the inorganic components in the catalyst by acid treatment, and examined by X-ray and electron diffraction, and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The diffraction patterns indicated that the carbon had a turbostratic graphite-like structure, and electron micrographs showed the layers to be curved or buckled. A pellet of the catalyst was sectioned in UHV to produce a virgin surface. Line scan Auger analysis showed that the carbon was distributed essentially uniformly across this surface. A model for the structure of the coke deposit is proposed.
