The interaction between oxygen and the lead chalcogenides at room temperature studied by photoelectron spectroscopy

Abstract
Core level and valence band spectra of the group IV–VI compounds PbS, PbSe and PbTe have been obtained by means of UV and soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We discuss effects of sorption of oxygen in the submonolayer range. A pronounced dependence of the O2 sticking coefficient on the semiconductor ionicity was found. Sticking coefficients of the order of 10-8 and 10-10 were estimated for PbTe and PbSe respectively. By varying the electron emission angle we obtained results that are strongly indicative of a diffusion mechanism for oxygen.
