Abstract
Abstract YBa 2 Cu 4 O 8 samples have been investigated by high-resolution electron microscopy. Many crystals show 90° rotation twins around the [001] axes, with (001) as the twin interface. The observations suggest an additional degree of freedom, i.e the orientation of the chains potentials leading to possibilities for “polytypoide” formation. A comparison is made with twinning in the YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 compound.
