Abstract
Abstract A long-period shear structure of La 2 CuO 4 has been determined using electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy. The shear planes are formed by edge-sharing CuO 6 octahedra; they are parallel with the (111) o planes of the orthorhombic basic structure. In successive domain strips the orthorhombic a o and c o axes are interchanged. The monoclinic shear structure has lattice parameters: a m =0.66 nm; b m =0.76 nm; c m =2.66 nm; β=103°; its space group is P12/cl above the T →0 transition temperature (560 K) and P1c1 below this temperature.
