Deoxygenation of secondary-tertiary vic-diols with chlorotrimethylsilane and sodium iodide has been shown to be a stereospecific reaction. Application of this procedure has led to the synthesis of melampolide and cis, cis-germacranolide type sesquiterpene lactones.
