Abstract
The interest in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) as an economically feasible alternative to the matured lithium-ion technology in medium-to-large scale and grid energy storage has been rejuvenated during the last decade. Despite a lower specific energy of SIBs electrode materials, a rich variety of crystal structural types distinctive to sodium-containing compounds and newly developed synthesis approaches have enabled designing commercially more attractive electrode materials with enhanced electrochemical properties which should speed up the widespread industrial deployment of SIBs. This chapter covers key classes of materials known so far that display reversible sodium ion de/intercalation properties, and discusses their important features promising for fundamental research and practical applications.
