Abstract
• Several calixarenes have been used to capture, store and use CO 2 . • There are less examples of pillararenes applied in this way. • Other cyclophanes have been used the least so far. • Materials based on all three classes of aromatic macrocycles have much room to grow. Aromatic units bring special features to supramolecular receptors when the challenge of binding and release of CO 2 is being addressed. Recent examples arising from calixarenes, pillararenes and cyclophanes are discussed in this review. The abilities of these systems to spatially organize metal coordination, hydrogen bonding or hydrophobic interactions for the purpose of CO 2 binding are pointed out. Consequences for sensing and catalytic reactions are also highlighted.
