Abstract
In this Review, we present a comprehensive overview of fundamental gas hydrate properties and formation theories. Key terminologies, theories and hypotheses for hydrate nucleation process were elucidated as bulletin points, while proposed hydrate growth models were categorized into groups based on variously proposed controlling mechanisms and compared in depth. Understanding and mastering these is instrumental to engineering the formation and dissociation of gas hydrates for beneficial applications. We conclude with an outlook on future research opportunities within this rapidly developing field, to facilitate future endeavors in the realm of gas hydrates.
