Influence of structural factors and medium properties on the fluorescence of alkyl and halogen substituted zinc(II) dipyrromethenates

The results of spectral studies of a series of zinc(II) complexes with alkyl and halogen substituted dipyrromethenes (HL) of the composition [ZnL2] in binary mixtures of cyclohexane with various additives of proton and electron donating co-solvents (acetone, ethanol, N,N-dimethylformamide, pyridine, diethylamine and triethylamine) were presented. The influence of polarity and electron-donating ability of the co-solvent and the functionalization features of dipyrromethene ligands on the fluorescence quenching efficiency of luminophores [ZnL2] was discussed. Found that [ZnL2] with dibromo-substituted ligands exhibits the highest sensitivity of the fluorescence characteristics to the presence of proton- and electron donor analytes in comparison with alkyl substituted analogues. The obtained results allow to offer zinc(II) dipyrromethenates as new, highly sensitive and selective fluorescent «On-Off» sensors of the O- and N-containing toxicants (up to ~ 8 ∙ 10−6 mol/l) in organic media.
