Abstract
With the advancement in technology, the size of devices goes on decreasing consistently. The decrease in the size has improved the efficiency and life time of devices. Quantum dots (QDs) have played a pivotal role in miniaturization of devices shrinking their dimension from micro to nano level. Quantum dots find applications in a variety of disciplines viz. medicine, quantum computers, light emitting diodes and solar cells etc. Synthesis and basic understanding of quantum dots have been progressing at an incredible pace making these materials available for various applications. In this paper, we have tried to provide an insight to the origin of quantum dots and their properties. We have discussed QDs synthesis focusing particularly on chalcogenide semiconducting materials to inspect their synthesis, structural and optical properties and their current applications. The attracting future interest applications of QDs across a broad range of fields, have strove us to put the review on chalcogenide semiconducting QDs both comprehensive and convenient to entrants as well as established researchers in this area.
