Electronic absorption and magnetic circular dichroism are reported for five bicyclic heterocycles derived from the phospholium and arsolium cations containing P-S, P-N, As-S, and As-N bonds. The spectra are analyzed in terms of the perimeter model and semiempirical calculations and are perfectly compatible with a delocalized aromatic π-electron system with pπ-bonding over the heterocyclic moiety
