Spectroscopic studies. Part 10.—Infra-red studies of solute–solvent interactions of phenol in fluorinated and mixed “inert” solvents.

The effect has been studied of solute–solvent interactions on the frequency and intensity of the ν(OH) band of phenol dissolved in a number of solvents (thirteen fluorinated hydrocarbons, amines and pyridines; n-hexane, carbon tetrachloride, benzene, chloro- and bromo-benzene, o-dichlorobenzene, p-xylene and pyridine). Similar studies plus the variation of temperature are reported for eight mixed solvents whose components were selected from the solvents listed above.It was found that the intermolecular interaction of the OH bond with fluorinated solvents is considerably weaker as compared with the hydrogenated parent solvents. In mixed “inert” solvents it was found that two separate complexes were formed.
