5-Oxoheptanoic acid or its esters may be used as convenient precursors in some alternate procedures1, avoiding high-pressure hydrogenation conditions2 for the preparation of 2-methyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione (3). However, known methods3 for their syntheses are not altogether satisfactory as these involve either multi-step reactions or require less readily accessible materials.
