Abstract
A convenient synthesis of 4H-cyclopenta[def]phenanthrene from acenaphthene is described. The method is suitable for relatively large scale preparation, making this hydrocarbon readily available as a starting compound for the synthesis of higher methylene-bridged polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
