A New Surgical Approach of Amniotic Membrane Transplantation for Superior Limbic Keratoconjunctivitis

Purpose: This study aimed to describe a new surgical approach of amniotic membrane transplantation for superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis. Methods: The surgical procedure involves conjunctival peritomy, removal and replacement of the loose mobile Tenon capsule by cryopreserved amniotic membrane with fibrin glue, and closure of the conjunctiva. Result: Not different from inferior conjunctivochalasis, superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis was found to exhibit abnormal Tenon capsule so as to allow the overlying conjunctiva to become redundant and mobile, especially during eyelid blinking. The surgical technique described herein is easy to perform and effective in resolving a patient’s irritative symptoms. Conclusions: Replacement of the Tenon by amniotic membrane not only results in better reinforcement of conjunctival adhesion on the sclera to correct the underlying pathogenesis of SLK but also provides a potential subconjunctival space for future conjunctival surgeries.
