Synergies between Universities and Industry: Success Factors for Effective Collaborations Promoting Innovation

Effective collaboration between universities and industry is becoming increasingly important in Industry 5.0, where human-centered approaches integrate with advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence. Universities provide theoretical knowledge and research, while industry offers practical tools, funding, and access to the latest technologies. Digital platforms are progressively bridging these sectors, promoting knowledge transfer and the joint development of new technologies and products. Previous research has already identified key drivers for the promotion of university-industry collaboration (UIC). However, there is still a need for detailed analysis and identification of key factors that enable the success of UIC. Our research addresses this need by systematically categorizing 13 success factors for UIC into four dimensions: knowledge management, strategic alignment, structure and organization, and team dynamics. Key success factors, including management, support infrastructure, effective communication, reciprocal partnerships, as well as trust and commitment, are particularly highlighted. In addition, we identified challenges such as operational and social differences which can hinder UIC. Our research led to the derivation of ten recommendations for action. These address success factors such as digital platforms and transparent communication to promote long-term synergies. To overcome the identified challenges, suggested recommendations also include balancing short-term and long-term goals, promoting cultural sensitivity, and simplifying administrative processes. In considering these factors and following the recommendations for action, our research provides a roadmap for sustainable and innovative collaboration between academia and industry within the context of Industry 5.0.
