Abstract
This paper proposes a self-bearing linear motion platform developed using bearingless flux-switching permanent magnet linear slice motors. While flux-switching permanent-magnet linear motors may not have superiority over surface or interior permanent magnet synchronous machines regarding torque density due to core saturation, They offer several advantages for linear applications, such as the use of pure iron rails. This makes them a more cost-effective solution compared to permanent magnet synchronous motors that require permanent magnet or wound rails. Moreover, the superior cooling capabilities of motors with stationary magnets make them an attractive option for a wide range of applications. Therefore, this paper has used flux switching permanent magnet motor and adopted a bearingless solution to addresses problems associated with bearings and offers features like high cleanliness and lubrication-free operation required in some applications for linear motion platforms. This paper presents the design and development of the proposed linear motor and evaluates its performance.
