Reactions of Tetra- and Pentachlorobiphenyls with Alkali in 2-Aminoethanol Medium

Abstract
Tetra- and pentachlorobiphenyls have revealed different reactivity in the reactions with alkali in 2-aminoethanol medium: 2,4,5,2ʹ,5ʹ-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB 101) has been converted into the corresponding hydroxy derivatives via nucleophilic substitution, whereas 2,5,3ʹ,4ʹ- and 3,4,5,2ʹ-tetrachlorobiphenyls (PCB 70 and PCB 76, respectively) have given the hydrodechlorination products besides the hydroxy compounds.
