Abstract
The review covers literature data on the synthesis of porphyrins, including amphiphilic star-shaped porphyrins which attract increasing attention from synthetic chemists. The potential of various porphyrins, metalloporphyrins, and their derivatives as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy of cancer has been discussed. The relation between the structure of porphyrins and their antimicrobial activity has been demonstrated. Polymer–porphyrin systems based on biodegradable polyesters and tetraphenylporphyrins immobilized thereon have been considered to be promising composite materials with bactericidal properties.
