Abstract
Designing biosensors based on zinc oxide is a challenging area of modern bioanalytical chemistry. The relevance of the topic is discussed in the introduction of the present paper, mainly concerning the possible enhancement of the sensitivity, selectivity, and detection rate of analyte. In the main body of the review, advanced properties of zinc oxide for bioanalytical applications are described in detail and various examples of zinc oxide morphology and techniques for developing ZnO-based nanostructures are proposed. Furthermore, the main principles underlying the fabrication of a zinc oxide biosensor are represented: approaches for modifying zinc oxide structures with the subsequent immobilization of the biomatrix are discussed; a classification of biosensors both by receptor type and analytic signal type is performed.
