Abstract
As early as the 1970s, physicists in the Asia Pacific had held some meetings to discuss the possibility of strengthening regional collaboration. The areas of focus of these discussions were three-fold:
1) Organising regional physics meetings
2) Establishing a regional physical society
3) Setting up a regional research centre
