Fabrication and characterization of reactive multilayer films and foils

Publication typeBook Chapter
Publication date2014-03-22
Abstract
This chapter explores exothermic, self-propagating formation reactions within multilayer films and foils, and it describes how the average chemistries and microstructures of the materials impact their measured reaction heats, ignition thresholds and reaction velocities. The chapter also reviews recent attempts to identify the very rapid phase transformations that occur within the layered materials, as well as the unsteady propagation of reactions at slower velocities. Lastly, commercial applications are described.
