Structural equation modeling (SEM) is a vast field and widely used by many applied researchers in the social and behavioral sciences. Over the years, many software packages for structural equation modeling have been developed, both free and commercial. However, perhaps the best state-of-the-art software packages in this field are still closed-source and/or commercial. The R package lavaan has been developed to provide applied researchers, teachers, and statisticians, a free, fully open-source, but commercial-quality package for latent variable modeling. This paper explains the aims behind the development of the package, gives an overview of its most important features, and provides some examples to illustrate how lavaan works in practice.

depmixS4 implements a general framework for defining and estimating dependent mixture models in the R programming language. This includes standard Markov models, latent/hidden Markov models, and latent class and finite mixture distribution models. The models can be fitted on mixed multivariate data with distributions from the glm family, the (logistic) multinomial, or the multivariate normal distribution. Other distributions can be added easily, and an example is provided with the exgaus distribution. Parameters are estimated by the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm or, when (linear) constraints are imposed on the parameters, by direct numerical optimization with the Rsolnp or Rdonlp2 routines.

Almost all modern rotation of factor loadings is based on optimizing a criterion, for example, the quartimax criterion for quartimax rotation. Recent advancements in numerical methods have led to general orthogonal and oblique algorithms for optimizing essentially any rotation criterion. All that is required for a specific application is a definition of the criterion and its gradient. The authors present the implementations of gradient projection algorithms, both orthogonal and oblique, as well as a catalogue of rotation criteria and corresponding gradients. Software for these is downloadable and free; a specific version is given for each of the computing environments used most by statisticians. Examples of rotation methods are presented by applying them to a loading matrix from Wehmeyer and Palmer.

Structural equation modelling (SEM) is a statistical technique used in the field of Information Systems amongst others. The technique has been paid attention thanks to its flexibility and predictive power. However, there is a paucity of guidelines in the application of the technique in the field of Behavioural Information Security. Hence, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive guide of using PLS-SEM in disclosure and privacy studies on Social Network Sites (SNSs). Data has been gathered using papers (n=21) published between 2006 and 2022 from scholarly databases such as Google Scholar, Association for Information Systems eLibrary (AISeL), IEEE Xplore and Science Direct. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA 2020) was used to analyse and synthesize the status of the field. Our systematic review covers data characteristics, reasons for using PLS-SEM, the evaluation of measurement models, the evaluation of the structural model and reporting best practices. The review proposed guidelines for the use of PLS-SEM in the discipline of Behavioural Information Security with a focus on disclosure and privacy on SNSs studies and other fields as well.
