Nonlinear Optical Properties of Colloidal PbS and Ag2S Quantum Dots Passivated with 2-Mercaptopropionic Acid

Abstract
A Z-scan study is performed of the nonlinear optical response of hydrophilic colloidal PbS and Ag2S quantum dots with average sizes of 2.2 and 2.9 nm, respectively, passivated with 2-mercaptopropionic acid (2-MPA). A Nd3+:YAG laser is used at wavelengths of 355 and 532 nm and a pulse length of 10 ns. It is found that the PbS/2-MPA and Ag2S/2-MPA colloidal solutions exhibit nonlinear refraction (defocusing) at both wavelengths. The saturation character of the dependence of the coefficient of nonlinear absorption on the intensity of laser radiation is revealed. It is established that localized states (e.g., the center of recombination luminescence) are responsible for both nonlinear optical effects.
