Abstract
Although the Sacred Arsenal (Ἱερὰ Ὁπλοθήκη) is one of the most important and voluminous remaining Byzantine inedita of the 12th century, it has as yet scarcely been studied. The dating of the Sacred Arsenal by Andronikos Kamateros has remained fluctuating between 1166 and 1175. However, the date of composition of Kamateros’ text can be determined with much more precision by taking into account George Skylitzes’ dedicatory verses, Oration 7 for Michael III “ Anchialos” by Eustathios of Thessalonica and the correspondence between Nerses “ The Gracious” and Manuel Komnenos.
