SELF – Student Experimental Physics Laboratory was established in 2008 at the Department of Physics http://fn.bmstu.ru/tm-fs-4 Faculty of Fundamental Sciences. A distinctive feature of the SELF laboratory is a project-based approach to solving current research, educational and engineering tasks. The laboratory helps to assemble a team of teachers, scientists and students of Bauman Moscow State Technical University in accordance with the needs of a specific student project. SELF helps participants to show their leadership qualities, learn how to work in a team of diverse specialists. The scientific director of the laboratory is Andrey Nikolaevich Morozov, Corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Physics at Bauman Moscow State Technical University. The head of the laboratory is Boris G. Skuibin, Associate Professor of the Department of Physics, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. We strive to develop youth science and introduce new methods of conducting scientific and project activities. So, in addition to research and project teams, the laboratory has departments for grants, design, marketing, translation, and SMM. Departments allow students to show their creative and organizational skills, and thanks to their active participation in the activities of the laboratory, we conduct scientific activities even more effectively. Thus, the patent department registered 20 patents for student developments.

The Talbot Effect

The Talbot Effect
The Talbot effect is a self–image of a periodic system of coherent radiation sources in near-field diffraction. When passing through a periodic structure of radiation with a wavelength that is not a multiple of an integer relative to the period of the structure, a fractional Talbot effect occurs. The experiment is carried out under the following conditions: the radiation from the laser passes through a collimator consisting of two sofocus collecting lenses and a pinhole limiting light noise. The laser and collimator, which together form the telescope device, form a flat monochromatic wave. When using a wide beam of light, which is created by the telescope, the diffraction grating is illuminated evenly. The radiation that has passed through the grating and diffracted as a result is directed through the lens to the photosensitive matrix of the camera. The micrometer screw of the alignment device, on which the microscope and camera are located, makes it possible to study the structure of Talbot's fractional images in more detail. Using the camera, the image is transmitted to the computer monitor.

The Zehnder-Mach interferometer is used in this study. In addition to optical work, it is used for the analysis of plasma and gas flows in discrete execution, in electro-optical modulators, as well as in the field of quantum physics.
